Open Day August 18th. This is to be held in Somerset, opposite the Royal Bath & West Showground Entrance, at the Prestcombe flock with many thanks to Julian Newth. Apart from Jacob sheep, Julian has cross bred lambs, show pigs and a dairy herd. He has arranged for us to get Live Lamb Grading Instruction in the morning and a Butchery demonstration in the afternoon, as well as promising us a hog roast, and maybe some stock pig judging for those that would like to have a go! As Julian lives near the Central Region, Southern Region and even Welsh region, members from other areas would be very welcome to come to this interesting day.
Show & Sale 2013 Following on from last year's success, the Show & Sale again will again be held this year in league with the RBST. The Date is Thursday September 26th. Please put this date in your diary. There will be an official Jacob inspection before the Show and an official Jacob judge to judge the entries. This year we will also be holding a Wool on the Hoof class. We are extremely grateful to our main sponsor, The Natural Fibre Company, which will be giving prize money for the Champion, Reserve Breed Champion and Champion and Reserve Wool on the Hoof. Don't forget to enter a fleece for the SW Wool Cup too! All entry forms above

Latest News
- May 16th Devon County Show. JSS SW Breed Stand has won the Gold Medal for the second year running! Many thanks to Chris and Charlottee for putting up the stand, to Vicky Hammond for re-doing some of the imformation for the boards, and also producing her stunning felted jacob goods, and to Jane Moor for spinning away and attracting members. Chris & Charlotte also won the Champion Jacob and shared the points cup with David and Mary Biggs. More details & photos later on.
- May 12th Open Day at Bere Ferrers at Peter Gorringe's Shutecombe Flock (4805). More than 35 of us had a good day at Peter's flock, with many thanks for their fantastic hospitality, and help from other members too. We were honoured to have the Chairman of the JSS, Robert Locker with us. Members were really impressed with the quality of the sheep and newer members learnt from Anna Milner what points to look out for in the Jacob. They then had a chance to handle the shearling ewes, some with spectacular wool and put them in their order of preference. Robert Locker then explained the order the judges would choose. Members also saw the young lambs all going on well and looking very fit! After lunch both Charlotte and Chris Slee showed members how to undertake various stock tasks and answered any questions. Members then went to their other field overlooking the river and saw the two rams, bred by Bridget Wilson that have been used and the older lambs too. It was a cold day but most members had come prepared .... and said how much they had enjoyed it.
- From the Jacob Sheep Society AGM April 2013!
Many Congratulations Firstly: to Jane Moor from Exeter for winning the Individual Entry of the Wool Cup for a hat, mitts and bag set. (The photo taken on my ipad does not do the entry justice!) There were hundreds of entries from around the country and Ireland too, so we are delighted this cup has come to the South West. Many thanks indeed to not only Jane, but to Anna Milner for organising and collecting the SW entries and also for entering the competition herself and to other South West members who entered, Vicky Hammond, Sarah Weaver and Sue Blacker for going to the trouble of submitting some really super entries too.

Also Many Congratulations to Christopher Slee for winning the "Young Person of the Year Trophy", which was presented at the AGM meeting in recognition of all hew has done to help the region and the society.
We did see some nice sheep from the Eastern Region too...below!
Photos. If anyone has some nice Jacob lamb photos taken this year, do send them in and I will put them on the website, space permitting.

| Photos show vet Liz demonstrating possible mal presentations of a lamb, and Chris Slee tubing a lamb |
Nineteen members attended this day with thanks to our hosts, the Slee family in Buckland Brewer in January. The morning session covered the feeding regime for in-lamb ewes; ewe diseases and vaccination; lambing pens and equipment disinfection; lambing equipment and stores needed. At lunchtime, Marilyn Slee kindly provided us all with hot soup to go with our picnics. Two of their ewes decided to lamb in front of everyone, with Chris and Charlotte Slee quickly demonstrating what to do. After lunch their vet, Liz, showed everyone, with the help of a dead lamb, the various ways lambs can be positioned in a ewe’s uterus and when assistance might be needed and how to go about it; also she demonstrated how to inject glucose into an over 5 hour old hypothermic lamb. She showed us some good photos on her laptop of lambs with Schmallenberg disease and how to identify this. It was all very useful revision for the more experienced and essential for the newer members. Chris demonstrated how to feed a new lamb with a stomach tube, and Charlotte how to bottle feed a lamb, before demonstrations of castrating and correct ring tail docking and ear tagging new lambs with temporary tags for the benefit of some newer members there.
